When the calendar pages flip, and the seasons change, that only means one thing...... My biannual California vacation is almost near. For the many of you who don't me, I am not exactly what you'd call an Okie. Before making the move out to the Sooner State, I was just your average desert skate rat living it up in Apple Valley, CA. It may sound glamorous, but with AV being located in the Mojave Desert, you see a lot more dirt/sand than apples. There are a few plus sides to the area though. The first, being that it is fairly close to all the cool amenities that California has to offer, and the second being my mom and sister are still holding it down out there. So when another 6 months rolls around, I make the trip out there to catch up with old friends and hang out with the family.
My good friend Johnny Kilmer and I have almost made a tradition to make my first day back into an epic skate session. Johnny, being a sorcerer behind a camera lens, and an awesome travel guide, knows where all the good spots are. Our original plan was to travel down to Palm Springs and skate the legendary "Nude Bowl", but some things changed once we got down there so we just enjoyed a nice little cruise around the Desert Hot Springs Skatepark.
With our original plans not working out, and the temperature creeping into the hundreds, we decided to head back up to Apple Valley and shred some local pools.
With the sun going down and the crazy desert people coming out, Johnny and I said our goodbyes, blasted our favorite songs, and headed home at 100 mph down a very sketchy road. It's always a pleasure buddy. Check out his weekly uploads on his Flickr and Instagram accounts.
It's not a trip to California without a visit to Disneyland, I mean c'mon! My lovely lady, Paige, was also in town for a few days on her vacation, so we gathered the whole clan up and made our way to the happiest place on Earth!
With Ella in school, and my mom running errands all day, I was able to use the next couple days to skate with some old friends at the local park. It's nothing crazy compared to other skateparks, but for some reason it was always one of my favorites. I use the in between 6 months I'm not there to think of tricks I should try when I go back. I was able to walk away with not one, but two new ones under my belt. See here, and here.
During the week, my sister's school hosted a really fun "Family Fun Night." They had all sorts of games, and activities. Ella even got her face painted!
It is a family tradition that we go putt putt golfing every time I visit. There's no stopping now! Even though Ella destroyed me, we both had a good time, and I was even able to win her a free game of mini golf by making the specialty 18th hole!
With the summer dwindling down to its last days we took advantage of my mom's little pool, and made sure we reeked havoc in the backyard as much as we could.
For my last day we tried to think of something super amazing that we could do. My mom's boyfriend, Kelly, suggested we take a trip to an old gold mine up in the mountains. We did just that, and it was the perfect outing to end my vacation.
Though we didn't come back with any gold, it was still a really good time. Once we had a minute to catch our breaths and pack up we headed for home for one final tradition.
My trips out to California are some of the best times I have all year. Even if I'm just sitting on the couch with my mom helping Ella do her homework, its always a pleasure. Moving away from my family and friends has definitely made me appreciate the little things when I go back. Just want to say thanks to my family and friends for showing me a good time, it always feels like I never left. TILL NEXT TIME!
