Norman Music Festival Vol. 9

Adventures, MUSICDusty GilpinComment

My wife, Kristen, has the opportunity to support local music and art through her job as Community Outreach with Fowler Auto Group. I get the opportunity to be her support crew as she sets up for events like Plaza Fest, Blue Dome Music Series, and a number of other events throughout the year. Norman Music Festival was this weekend's event for Kristen and we got to be there to help celebrate it's 9th birthday!

I'm no photographer, but I wandered around to a few different shows and took pictures of the performances I did catch. I'll do my best to link band's contact information so you can check them out yourself. If you didn't get the chance to head out, make a point to visit NMF next year. It is a really incredible event and has incredible support staff, sponsors, and participating artists. Congratulations and thank you to everyone involved in this years festival, it was really wonderful!

Jabee Williams had an incredible set! We've known each other for almost 10 years, I am very, very proud of him and how far along his music has come. Go preorder his new album, 'Black Future' right now:  JabeeMusic.com

I made Kristen stay up late so we could catch The Wurly Birds perform at 1am. We were exhausted and had to leave a little early, but I understand they even covered the National Anthem and had the crowd chanting, "USA! USA!" at one point. Never a dull moment with this crew. They are incredible local musicians!

I was telling Jabee how great of a set LTZ aka @ElTeaZee , aka Tony LeSure had on Saturday morning. This is another local hip-hop artists I've gotten to watch mature over the years. He is a hilarious individual and his music is really incredible.

Chase Kerby and the Villians played the Main Stage shortly after LTZ. Chase and I went to the same highschool and ended up founding Tree & Leaf together, and actually the name, Tree & Leaf, was Chase's idea! Down the road Chase rightfully chose to pursue his passion of music and it was the right choice. He has played along side countless artists, been featured on The Voice, and is an incredible musician and all-around great guy.

I don't know much about Lord Buffalo  except that they can shred. They call themselves a 'desert rock' band, and when you give it a listen, you'll know exactly what that means. If you're into a very tight, drivey, southern rock, look no further. Great show!

It was perfect timing that while I was hanging out with the wonderfully talented, Nathan Poppe , a few of my hip-hop homies rolled up. From left to right; B-Boy J. Deveere , 'The Dean' Ronnie Harris , Jabee , (myself), and Big-B Brain . I've known all these guys for about 10 years and they are all incredibly talented in their own right. From photography/videography, break dancing, graffiti, emceeing, rapping, graphic design, and production, they have it covered. So glad to have a brief reunion with them this weekend.

Great set by Beau Jennings and the Tigers  at the Sooner Stage. Note Chase Kerby holding down guitar and keyboard right after his set on the Main Stage (what a pro!).

Horse Thief  with a great set and a humongous crowd. It was insane the support they had.

My last show for Saturday night was The Stockyard Playboys . About 6 months ago I caught these guys candidly playing at Saint's Pub. They covered every outlaw country song I wanted to hear and even let me make some requests. I sang along all night and as I left, I asked what their band was called. Of course, I forgot. I was scrolling through the NMF schedule and saw 'Stockyard Playboys' and it hit me that it was the same band. I had to see them again!

In between sets, and errand running, and moving things, and sweating, and drawing, and being a spokesperson for The Spy and Fowler Auto , I got to sit down next to the most beautiful, hardest working, woman I know. Big thanks to Nathan Poppe for catching this little glimpse of my weekend. I loved the music but this was the best part.
