We printed Tony Thunder's posters yesterday and they turned out great. I am really excited for this new venture we're taking on as screenprinters/artists, and I couldn't have wanted the inaugural run of posters to go as smoothly as they did. The colors, the art, and 130lb French paper we used all clicked to create a really great poster. They will be signed and numbered by the artist, and ONLY 25 will be made available. The prints will be sold for only $30 and are sized at 12x16. Don't sleep on this because at $30 and a limited run of 25 they aren't going to last long. They will only be for sale in our store and will be released THIS FRIDAY from 7-10:00pm. Tony will be showcasing new artwork, and we'll have a full bar for all you holics. Come join us for a FREE good time.

Nathan Poppe is a great friend of ours and is doing some really cool stuff in Oklahoma City's art scene. Every month he teams up with the Fowler Volkswagen to interview an up and coming artist from our city. If you're familiar with our clothing, the SPYwagon is not news to you (SEE Spy Van.) Nathan has been filming these interviews since late 2010, and his interviews are a broad collection of musicians and artists of many different genres. The artists perform somewhat - candidly, acoustically, and improvishly - in the back of a 60's model Volkswagen bus that leaves the viewer with a very intimate look at the art and artist at hand. We tip our hat to all involved, and are very proud to be featured as this month's artists.

Watch our video below and definitely visit the V-Dub Sessions for great local music and wonderful art interviews.

We're now being represented in the beautiful city of Norman, Oklahoma! Our friend Breanne at Unlabeled Apparel is carrying our brand alongside some of Oklahoma's other great t-shirt brands like Doin' Fine! The store features a great selection of art by local artists, prints, clothing, jewelery, jeans, and accessories. So Normanites, go visit Breanne and spend lots of money!

Tree & Leaf Tony Thunder

One of the first pieces of local art I ever bought was by Tony Thunder, and is still one of my favorites. Tony has a very unique and raw cartoon style that comically satirizes politics, religion, and daily life with the use of cartoon humans, animals, and monsters. Watching Tony draw is a show within itself. Besides Hector Lopez, I've never met another artist that can create characters at such ease and speed. Tony can simply doodle out a bunch of characters in a matter of minutes that dwarf some of my best well thought out illustrations. Seriously, his art is awesome, his graphic design abilities are quickly on the rise, and his art is affordable.

I've been doing poster prints for a while now, but yesterday our poster and paper printing became legitimate. I built a two station printing table with the intention of increasing our print capabilities.

This wasn't just on a whim, at the beginning of the year we decided that we would begin hosting a local artist to create a run of poster prints once a month. Tanner Frady has been booking a schedule for the upcoming year and we are excited to have our inaugural poster art show with Tony Thunder. Each print will be limited to no more than 50 prints. The shows will always fall on the last Friday of the month for consistency sake. We will also be hanging works and merchandise by each artist as well as the prints. The prints will be exclusively sold in our store.

Come hang out for our first show, it will be a great start to a cool monthly release. Support local art.

tree and leaf drink and draw

First and foremost - I'm apologizing for John and I both because we haven't blogged in a month. We have been working hard and have a lot of cool stuff coming this spring. The nonblogging was totally worth the progression of the brand!

Anyway...

For the last two years, inconsistently I've had an unofficial Thursday Night Sketch Session. It's attended by a great group of my artist friends when we're all available. As nerdy as it may sound, we just sit around a draw. Everyone has their own style and subject matter. Sometimes we exchange sketchbooks, make stickers, occasionally someone works on school art projects or design work thumbnails. Whatever the case - we sit and draw and critique. In my humble opinion, it is one of the best methods for progessing artistically.

Since I've been busy and inconsistent with hosting the sessions at my house, I've decided that I'll make it more of a commitment in order to keep me accountable to drawing. Now EVERY THURSDAY from 8 to 11pm at the TREE & LEAF store, I'll leave the doors open for ANYONE to come draw.

(Even if you don't draw you are more than welcome to attend. If you have design questions or questions about the brand or running your own business or screenprinting, I'll be here to chat. We're not selling anything, we're just hanging out.)

I've got a couple big tables and a bunch of chairs, so bring your sketchbooks, and pencils, and snacks, and beer or whatever beverages you want to consume. It'll be rad...and dorky. I know initially this will be slow, I'm not expecting a massive art party. Either way, I'll be here drinkin a cold couple and drawing cartoons. Maybe we'll see ya.
